With our Full-staffing services, RAE provides you with a
Program Supervisor, a Senior Tutor, and a team of tutors.
We provide Full-staffing Services to families residing in the South Bay
(Torrance, Redondo Beach, Palos Verdes) and surrounding areas.
Through team meetings and regularly scheduled home visits, the Program
Supervisor will:
- Assess
your child’s areas of need based upon his/her current levels of
functioning. The Program Supervisor will determine these through
observation and assessment and by descriptions of your child’s behavior
and skills provided by you and other team members.
- Develop
and monitor the program by tailoring the curriculum and strategies used
to accomplish educational and behavioral goals customized to your child.
- Provide
ongoing training to you and the entire instructional team to implement
your child’s program and promote generalization to all settings.
Please
note:
The Program Supervisor will also address other areas that
may be unique to your child’s individual program. These may
include coordinating with other service providers (e.g.,
Speech Therapist, Occupational Therapist, classroom teacher),
selecting an appropriate classroom, and providing support and
training to your child’s classroom staff.
The Senior Tutor and tutors will carry out the behavioral and
educational plan developed and maintained by the Program Supervisor.
Administration of the program will be carried out by the Senior Tutor
and Program Supervisor.
Behavioral Intervention Team
An intensive behavioral intervention team is comprised of several
different members: the child, the child’s parent(s) or guardian(s), a
Program Supervisor, a Senior or Lead Tutor, and several other tutors.
Any other individual who is directly working with your child to
accomplish the goals of the intervention program (e.g., Speech
Pathologist) and who participates in regular team meetings is also
considered a member of the behavioral intervention team.
a. Parent or Guardian:
Your active involvement in your child's education is vital to its
success. We will give you the tools to support this involvement, which
include training you in effectively implementing the Discrete Trial
Teaching method and principles of Applied Behavior Analysis. We will
ask you to practice and reinforce those skills your child is learning
in structured teaching sessions during your time together in other
settings. We will also ask you to collect data and record your
observations when this information will assist the team’s efforts.
b. Program Supervisor:
The Program Supervisor conducts weekly or bimonthly team meetings,
provides regularly scheduled home visits, and supervises the team of
instructors.
c. Tutors:
Together with the Senior Tutor, the team of tutors consistently
provides the recommended number of one-to-one instruction hours each
week. We will always endeavor to staff our programs with previously
trained and experienced tutors. When this is not possible, RAE will
recruit and extensively train one or more carefully selected
individuals in order to provide a full team of well-trained tutors.
RAE’s founder and lead supervisor has recruited and trained numerous
individuals who have become Senior Tutors, Consultants, Program
Supervisors, and Directors of other related intervention centers. RAE’s
tutor training program is closely modeled after the most recent
training protocol followed at the UCLA Clinic for the Behavioral
Treatment of Children. Tutors receive 20 hours of classroom instruction
while they receive practical training in implementing the Discrete
Trial Teaching and Applied Verbal Behavior methodologies and the
principles of Applied Behavior Analysis. Tutors who perform
exceptionally well in all of their duties receive additional training
and take on the role of Senior Tutor.
d. Senior Tutor:
While also providing one-to-one instruction and training to other
tutors, the Senior Tutor takes on increased administrative
responsibilities such as scheduling instruction sessions, maintaining
data sheets, and summarizing your child’s progress before team meetings.
Team Meetings
As often as weekly, the behavioral intervention team will meet to
ensure that all procedures are conducted consistently across the team,
that all tutors are equally confident in conducting each program, that
expectations regarding your child’s behavior are consistent, that
questions or misunderstandings are cleared up as quickly as possible,
and to assess your child’s program and progress. All members of the
team should be present including you and your child.
Workshop
Services
Workshops
are comprehensive and ongoing sessions conducted to provide families
with the tools needed to start and maintain an effective behavioral
intervention program. We provide workshops to families regardless of
geographic location.
During each workshop, your consultant will:
- Assess
your child’s areas of need based upon his current levels of
functioning. Your consultant will determine these through observation
and assessment during the workshop and by descriptions of your child’s
behavior and skills provided by you and other team members.
- Select programs and strategies aimed at accomplishing educational and behavioral goals customized to your child’s needs.
- Train
you and your instructional team to implement these programs. Training
consists of repeated demonstration of all teaching procedures,
role-playing, and constructive feedback provided to all team members.
Please
note: Your consultant will also provide information and training
related to areas that may be unique to your child and his or her
program. These may include managing behavior, generalizing skills
outside the home, selecting an appropriate classroom, and/or providing
training to your child’s classroom teacher.
Who Should Attend the Workshop
Any and all persons working directly with your child to accomplish his
educational and behavioral goals should attend the workshop. These
persons may include your child’s classroom teacher, classroom aide, and
speech pathologist.
Length of Workshop
We recommend that initial workshops take place in a 3-day session.
Follow-up workshops can be scheduled bimonthly, monthly, or quarterly
based on need and your proximity to the consultant. Each workshop day
consists of 6 hours of service that may include a classroom observation
for children enrolled in school. These hours will be planned to meet
the scheduling needs of your family and the team. A typical workshop
begins at 9:00am and ends at 4:00pm (with a one-hour break from noon to
1:00pm).
Follow-up Consultations
In order to maintain a maximally effective program for your child, his
or her progress and your tutors’ teaching techniques should be
evaluated regularly. Frequent evaluation will allow your consultant to
provide appropriate ongoing recommendations to develop your child’s
program and feedback to tutors to optimize their teaching. In order to
accomplish these objectives, we ask that you communicate with your
consultant at least monthly via telephone, email, or video
consultation. In addition, follow-up consultations should be scheduled
bimonthly, monthly or every 3-4 months, depending upon need and your
proximity to your consultant.
Telephone Consultations
This service allows you to speak directly with your consultant to
answer your questions and receive program recommendations. You may
schedule a phone consultation to cover one question or a number of
questions regarding any area of your child’s program. These
consultations can be scheduled as needed or at regular intervals (e.g.,
weekly, every 2 weeks). You may wish to speak with your consultant
during these consultations and/or have your senior tutor participate.
Email Consultations
This service allows busy parents (or grandparents or Senior Tutors) to
present their questions at any time of the day or night. Your
consultant will respond with answers to your questions and
recommendations for new or modified programs within 24 hours.
Video Consultations
Teaching standards set by your consultant during the workshop
inevitably stray after the workshop has ended. If not remedied, poor
teaching techniques often become rooted in a tutor’s teaching styles
and reduce the effectiveness of a child’s program. In order to evaluate
a tutor’s techniques as well as your child’s progress, you may wish to
send a videotape of your child and tutors in a typical teaching
session. The tape should be approximately 60 minutes and should show at
least one example of every current program and any other content that
is applicable to your questions. Your consultant will review the tape
and then schedule a telephone or email consultation to provide his or
her comments and recommendations.
