Many children, with or without special needs, experience fear and exhibit sensory sensitivities and problem behaviors associated with the requirements of doctor, dental, and lab test visits. Parents and medical staff are often unable to address these concerns and can resort to physical restraint and even sedation. Parents may give up and go home without needed examination or treatment, or may avoid critical medical visits altogether. Our BCBAs design a behavior plan and skill-building protocol to improve behaviors that led to successful visits to the doctor, dentist, clinic or hospital.

Children on the Autism Spectrum often experience fear and anxiety associated with sensory sensitivities. Getting a haircut is just one example. Sensory Sensitivities can range from the feel of the cape fastened around a child's neck to the feel of cut hair falling on a child's skin. Many parents try to adapt to their child's sensory sensitivities, perhaps by cutting their child's hair when they are asleep or rushing through the process while their child screams and cries. myCoach can effectively increase a child's tolerance to getting an unrushed and safe haircut.

Children in general spend less time playing outside these days.Much of their time, outside of school, is spent with electronic media: TV, DVDs, computer, video games, etc. This can be even more prevalent with children with special needs. Children with special needs can experience low muscle tone, poor posture, poor coordination, sensory sensitivities, and lack of interest in sports or other physical activity. As a result, their physical health can be undermined. myCoach works with parents, coaches, and any caring adult who works with a child to address his/her physical fitness needs. myCoach staff address increasing independence and improving overall physical fitness, whether the child is performing a circuit at his local YMCA, engaged in a martial arts class, attending swim lessons, or building a jogging routine. Good physical fitness should be for everyone!

myCoach enables children with social deficits to actively participate in a variety of community-based activities in meaningful and beneficial ways: summer camp, team sports, religious services, and more. We don’t think children should be “motored through” activities, but should receive needed assistance and systematic fading of this assistance in order to develop and strengthen social, communication, daily living and social skills. Our BCBAs and myCoach staff work with the child to teach him/her replacement behaviors for maladaptive behaviors or behaviors that may interfere with the child’s success in community activities. We want all children to have fun and make new friends!
